About Casie DeSalvio (Varner)

The first day of school for the 2015-2016 school year.

My name is Casie DeSalvio and I am a fifth grade teacher in San Dimas. As a child, I attended school in the Alta Loma School District and then Chaffey Joint Union School District for high school. I attended Cal Poly Pomona for both my undergraduate degree and for my Multiple Subject teaching credential. Cal Poly Pomona has been an amazing adventure for me not only for where I received a higher education, but it's also where I met my amazing husband. I now work for the school district that he and his siblings attended K-12. When I'm not in my classroom or on TPT or Pinterest for some different teaching ideas, I enjoy using my Cricut machine for creating decorations for my home or pieces for scrapbook pages.
Technology is becoming my friend, on most days that it's working that is. Last year, I was able to attend the CUE Conference in Palm Springs and hope to go to it again this next March. I learned a lot and am always looking for new ways to bring technology into my classroom. This past summer I had the opportunity to be a "Tech Guide" in my school district and teach about how to create a Blogger site and how to embed documents, slides, calendar, etc. into the Blogger site. Several teachers at my school site are now using Blogger for their classroom website. :)
I have been wanting to go back to school to earn my Masters Degree for a few years now, but didn't know what I had wanted to get it in. About a year ago when doing research of the different Masters programs that Cal Poly has to offer, I discovered the Educational Multimedia option and knew that it was the program I wanted to be a part of. The school district that I work for has a goal of being 1:1 in technology by the 2018 school year. My hope is that this program will teach me different programs that I can use with my students every day as well as how I can become an almost paperless classroom. I currently share a Chrombook cart with three other classrooms and can't wait to be able to have my own cart, so that my students and I can use the Chromebooks more often. I know that a lot of what I will be learning in this program will be with apps and software programs that must be downloaded onto computers/laptops, but I hope that I will be able to learn about programs that are Google run or that don't need to be downloaded so that my students and I will be able to use different technology pieces on the Chromebooks. I'm very excited to see what this program has to offer!

  1. Hi Casie!

That sounds great you want to be able to run an almost paperless classroom. With how involved students are in technology, as well as the need to become more environmentally friendly, I think it's definitely essential for education to head in that direction!

Hope this quarter goes well for you and have fun with your Cricut machine (they look incredibly fun)! :)

  2. Casie,

Sounds like your district is in the same boat as mine. Currently, our teachers are sharing a cart between two or three teachers, but we too are marching towards the 1:1 ratio. Does your district has a stated deadline for being 1:1?

  3. Hi Casie,

As a teacher, I understand your eagerness to learn how to use technology in your classroom. I see that you have already made the first steps to that direction. I also like TPT, and I recently joined it. Maybe you can tell me more about TPT. Although I'm interested in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages), I'm sure we'll both enjoy the contribution technology can make to our classes.

  4. Casie,

That is great that you became a tech guide for your school, that puts you out there and makes you accountable as you are learning new skills for yourself and colleagues. I am glad to hear you had a great experience at the CUE conference in Palm Springs. It is something for me to think about, so I can learn new ideas on how to integrate technology in the classroom.
